WOES RE-ESTABLISHED FOR BALLOT QUESTION
Wakefieldians Opposed to Excessive Spending announced today that they have re-established the organization in order to urge a no vote on the upcoming Referendum.
In order to promote or oppose a ballot question you must have a ballot committee registered with the state. WOES was originally formed in 2005 to oppose the override and was successful in defeating it by an almost 2 -1 margin. In addition to reorganizing they have also launched their new website at www.no-override.com
Regarding the upcoming referendum, Mike Conley, a spokesperson for the group said: “We believe the action taken by the School Committee to bring forth a budget that was over 2 million dollars over the Finance Committees recommendation was irresponsible and divisive. The actions taken by the PTO’s and the teachers union at town meeting were reprehensible, irresponsible and self serving. The Finance Committee was opposed to this as was the majority of the Board of Selectmen. It is our goal to allow the entire town to vote on this matter and defeat the amendment.”
If the Ballot question is defeated it will return the school department’s budget back to the previous year’s amount, which is still 2% higher than what the Finance Committee recommended.
Mike Conley went on to say that, “this is the first step for the proponents of this to ask for an override. If the question passes the towns budget will be over 2 million dollars out of balance. The only way to recover that will be cuts to budgets to make up the difference or an override attempt. Make no mistake they want to pass this question and move on to an override.”
